At the basis of judgment lies a full grasp of principles under consideration; and, as a result, there comes the other important element of success, mental confidence. Mere knowledge can never make a successful engineer, but knowledge backed by judgment and confidence in the correctness of a line of procedure seems to lie at the foundation of all successful undertakings. Correct judgment involves careful, accurate observation. Judgment only follows discrimination, and discrimination involves observation. Constant stress placed on the cultivation of observation will lead to superficial mental habits. Seeing things is of but little value, unless, at the same time, relations and connections are sought for. Thoroughness in whatever is undertaken is another prime requisite. It is characteristic of unmatured minds to generalize and to shirk the study of details. Students are too prone to select a few details for inspection and arrive at unwarranted generalizations and hasty judgments. The instructors should see to it that all laboratory exercises are strictly logical and well matured. Then the first duty of the student is to thoroughly master the exercise before its execution is begun. The individual pieces of apparatus must be carefully examined, and their construction, so far as it has bearing on the contemplated determination, thoroughly comprehended. It is well to emphasize this portion of the work, for correct judgment is impossible without knowledge of details. The danger of the lecture-room Is that students may grow to be worshippers of books and authorities, accepting results without subjecting them to analysis.
